Dust and your health

MAKING HOMES HEALTHIER

A study conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has shown that frequently passing a vacuum cleaner and deep cleaning improves interior air quality by as much as 52 %.
A better Central Vacuum System means better air quality and an indoor environment which is less conducive to allergens such as household dust mites – an acknowledged factor in the asthma equation.

Making homes even healthier, Husky’s built in vacuum cleaning systems remove the residual dust generated by domestic life – fabric fibres, dirt brought into the house on shoes and clothing, airborne particles from outdoors, and the microscopic particles of organic matter on which dust mites thrive.
Unlike a conventional vacuum cleaner, Husky’s central vacuum systems quietly remove this dust and allergens to a centralized vacuum and collection unit located either in a separate closet space, or even better, in a garage. This eliminates the potential for 'recirculating' dust within the living accommodation and contributing directly to better respiratory health, and a much cleaner home. Are you looking for ways to create a cleaner, healthier home environment? You're not alone - a recent survey conducted by Professional Builder Magazine found that 66% of today's homebuyers want specific features that make their homes healthier.

A very important aspect of your home is the quality of the air you breathe. Indoor air pollutants like animal dander, dust mites, mould and pollen are a common cause of allergic conditions and other health problems. Using the right vacuum cleaner can significantly reduce your exposure to these airborne particles.

Anyone who has used a portable vacuum recognizes the characteristic odour it produces after just a few minutes of use. That smell is created by the dirt and dust that the vacuum is recirculating into the air - dirt that contains bacteria, mould and other airborne particles.

Husky Central Vacuums promotes cleaning efficiency by filtrating as small as .03 micron and prevents recirculation of dust, dirt, and odours in the home. By eliminating the recirculated dirt, Husky central vacuum makes the air in your home cleaner and healthier to breathe.

FIGHTING AGAINST ASTHMA

Speaking at the launch of the report, Dr Pat Manning, Respiratory Physician and Chairperson, Severe Asthma Advisory Group said "Approximately 6,300 people in Ireland suffer from severe asthma and 80 to 100 people die each year in Ireland due to asthma. Severe asthma is a debilitating condition which causes frequent emergency treatment, hospital admissions, breathlessness and speech limiting attacks. This report highlights the social, personal, health and economic burden of severe asthma in Ireland."

WHAT CAN CAUSE ASTHMA?

Dust Mites ▪ Mould ▪ Cockroaches & Pests ▪ Second hand smoke ▪ Pets ▪ Nitrogen Dioxide

WHAT ARE DUST MITES?

Dust mites are tiny insects that are invisible to the naked eye. Every home has dust mites. They feed on human skin flakes and are found in mattresses, pillows, carpets, upholstered furniture, bedcovers, clothes, stuffed toys and fabric and fabric-covered items. Body parts and faeces from dust mites can trigger asthma in individuals with allergic reactions to dust mites, and exposure to dust mites can cause asthma in children who have not previously exhibited asthma symptoms.

WHAT ARE MOULDS?

Moulds are microscopic fungi that live on plant and animal matter. Moulds can be found almost anywhere; they grow on virtually any substance when moisture is present.
Moulds produce tiny spores to reproduce, just as plants produce seeds. Mould spores waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually. When mould spores land on a damp spot indoors, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on in order to survive. Some moulds can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods and even dynamite.

WHAT ACTION CAN YOU TAKE?

  • * Remove dust often with a central vacuum system.
  • * Vacuum carpet and fabric-covered furniture to reduce dust build-up.
  • * Using vacuums with high efficiency filters or central vacuums may be very helpful.
  • * People with asthma or allergies should leave the area being vacuumed when done with portable vacuum

A Central Vacuum System removes:

- Bacteria - viruses - mould - fungi - harmful particles - Dust & mite’s
- Pet odours - pet dander - dust & mites.

With all ordinary vacuum cleaners a portion of the dust is picked up and redistributed back into the room through the exhaust. This adversely affects those suffering from asthma, allergies or respiratory problems. A central vacuum system removes dust and dirt through pipes. This reduces the need to dust and when a vacuum system is vented externally it represents the only form of vacuum cleaner that can boast genuine 100% filtration.
